Some of us have "issues" with food as well as booze, drugs etc. We were talking in the chatroom and decided we would help each other lose weight with tips on how we are doing it. So once a week whoever wants to , can mark down how much they lost. How they did it.
I know for me,, I have to eat breakfast to get my metabolism going. I know I SHOULD be walking but I am having trouble getting going again.
Somebody HELP me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea Melly
I know for myself I have put on ummm about 15lbs this last year and I can feel the effects quite severely on my arthritis. That being said I know I have a few limitations but that does not mean I cannot do certain things to maintain a healthy weight for my body size.
For me 2 years ago I had been seeing a physiotherapist and she was great. She had advised me to do some simple strengthening exercises so I could keep the majority of my mobility, and then she advised me to walk 2 miles a day , preferably after dinner. Or to join water therapy which is provided for people who do have arthritis, I didnt join that because most of the people there were 60 or older
I had learned too that when "we" meaning women who have gone through menopause or in the middle of it, our metabolism changes. The rules we have followed and learned over the years don't apply anymore. In some ways you can look at it as a clean canvas or slate , you can explore what works for your body with some common sense and research.
It has been explained to me and it does work, that you need to eat 3 meals a day, skipping one of those can create weight gain and it doesn't matter what you have eaten , it still happens. The combination of the right foods is important too.
I did do this for a few years and was very diligent about it, I lost some weight and felt alot healthier for it as well, however last winter came and I slacked off. Well then one thing led to another and bang , i have put 15lbs on, so self discipline plays a big part of it too
Thanks for starting this, and I too will keep sharing on how my progress is going. However today I know that I am never going to be a skinny minny again, and that's okay, I just need to be healthy and within a certain weight bracket that my body frame can handle comfortably

O'siyo,
Good topic and good idea! Being anorexic with bulimic tendencies (how's that for an interesting label?! food is a big issue with me.
Melly, you are correct in saying that we need to eat a breakfast. For the longest time I never did, and I still struggle with eating breakfast to this day. I have to look at it in this way.....when I eat breakfast, I am starting my metabolism, which is what I need. If my metabolism isn't 'switched on', then I can't lose weight (does that make sense? lol)
About 9 years ago, I weighed 323 lbs. I don't weigh myself anymore, too much of a trigger for me, but I do know that I am under 175 lbs now. I credit a lot of that weight loss - and the maintenance of it - to eating breakfast. Sounds like a lil, simple thing, and it is! But it's hard to do.
Mino'debizi (good luck) everyone!!!

I do not have an issue with food. It has an issue with me. I love it but it just does not seem to want to leave me when I want it too. I hate those fatal attraction types.
I used to live a very active life style with plenty of exercise just from the work I did. At one time I was actually put in the Navy's "Fat Boy Program" to put weight on because I needed to be over 145 to enter Combat Training. But after my back injury and then the depression and other "stuff" that followed my weight ballooned from the 140’s until about two years ago when I hit 265.
Considering that I weighed a whole 125 when I entered treatment in ’90 I had become more than twice the man I was when I entered AA!

December of ‘04 I got a few shocks that made me look at what I was doing and where I was going. I was taking the max dose on several antidepressants, neurontin for pain, and several other meds and was spending most of my time in a haze. I might as well have been back out drinking. I had allowed the doctors and p-shrinks take over as my higher power. I had become a passive victim in my life instead of an active participant. One of the places that was showing up was I my waist line. There were many other signs and symptoms but the weight and all that went with it including having the basic build of a beluga whale and all the energy of 90 year old nursing home couch potato. I knew I had to make a change or eventually go back out… or die.
With the help of a good sponsor I began to learn to apply the principles to all my affairs, including my PTSD, depression and other issues. September of ’06 I had done the work necessary to get off of the meds. The counseling, group therapy, physical and occupational therapy… My impetuous nature told me to just quit all that stuff and go for it. But my sponsor talked me into working it through, not just recklessly jumping to the next fix.
About 2 years ago I began to get serious about the weight. I had been playing with it, going from diet to diet, exercise binges, dropping 5 or 10 pounds, maybe 15 and then putting it right back on.
It was the Holiday formal dance for wife’s job and we were stepping out. When I realized that the new suit I had gotten because all my old ones were too small on me was now too tight (I only wear them for leads, weddings, funerals and other rare formal necessary events) it was that little thing that becomes the last straw.
I started looking seriously at my eating habits, when I was eating what I was eating and most important why I was eating. I already had the tools to do the job.
I have been using the steps to get to the causes and conditions, to look at what makes me eat more than I need to or sometimes even more than I want to. In the mean time I modify my behaviors. It’s not like booze or drugs where I can just stop. But I can see where and when I am eating at my feelings, eating out of twisted instincts, eating out of habit instead of healthy need.
BTW I have not been able to weigh in for while (my scale along with most of my stuff is in Texas) but the last time I did I was down to 210.
Progress…
Now if I can resist going out for ice cream to celebrate.

I may not be up for dancing but I'll play on your idea and take a "marathon" walk (>5 miles) at lest three times a week and good daily ones.

Hi guys,
Ok, im so in!!! I have gained about 15-20 pounds since i got sober. My thinking at first was, so what... and least im not drinking. Which was fine for awhile and is still true to a point, my sobriety comes first, before anything else. However, all good things must come to an end and its time to get my eating habits back under control.
I need to be honest. I have been meaning to post here for about 3 days now, but everytime ive typed something in, i deleted it lol. I tend to be an "exteme" dieter. I am great at cutting out whole food groups, drastically restricting calories, etc. The more extreme the diet, the more likely i am too stick with it and actually enjoy the whole experience.
However, that doesnt seem like the direction i want to go now. Im trying so hard in other areas of my life to get/be healthy, mentally spiritually and physically. Instead of doing what will bring quick results, i want to do what is sensible and what will be good for me in the long run Hmmm new concept for me lol.
So, im looking forward to reading what you guys are doing, and staying open to any suggestions. The last thing i want to do is transfer my addiction to food, or get crazy with my dieting . Look forward to posting about my amazing progress lol
Love you guys
Hope

| Exercise is the most healthy, balanced and benificial way to control your weight.Just try walking for starters.I replaced alcohol with sweets, esp. chocolate, so i feel your pain.Been in the health bus for 30 yrs helping others to lose, improve health, recover from surgery/injury etc...exercise balances all, and it is like good drugs for your emotional and mental well being. |

Exercise is a must for me, whether it be walking, biking of some form or exercise. I gained quite a bit of weight after I quit smoking and began losing it slow but sure a year ago this past August. I started biking in April of this year, lost a little but also have been toning up in the legs.I have to eat healthy too and I do well with that for a bit and then fall back into the snacky stuff. I would like to lose 50 pounds by this next June. Hard around the holidays. Will keep you posted.

| hey, everyone! I'm new here.....and this thread sounds like fun. I teach pole dancing classes, run, and lift weights.....but I do with food as I do with booze...I BINGE. this week has been horrible since I dumped out all the vodka....hah. what are you guys doing to distract yourselves? is anyone else in the early stages of the program like I am? I have a problem with staying focused. usually I am doing 5 things at once, and unless I actually leave my house and go to the studio I cannot get a decent workout in as I get distracted easily. I've found that if I exercise self control while at the grocery store, then the chips are not there at 9 at night when I've got the munchies.....I have to really want it to get dressed and head to the store......maybe I'm taking too much on at once, but I'd like to shed about 30 pounds by April. ooooh the pressure..... |

hey, check out the website fitday.com. I just found it. it's free, and you enter what you eat, you can even program in custom stuff, and it graphs it for you in reference to fat, protein, etc. you can also enter a goal weight and date, enter exercise, and at the end of every day it gives you a general idea of how many cals you ate and burned. probably not an exact science, but will sure make me aware of everything I'm eating!!!
