NAMASTE

an ancient sanskrit blessing

"I honor the place in you where Spirit lives
I honor the place in you which is
of Love, of Truth, of Light, of Peace,
when you are in that place in you,
and I am in that place in me,
then we are One."

It is pronounced as"Namastay" with the first two a's as the first a in "America" and the ay as in "stay", but with the t pronounced soft with the area just behind the tip of the tongue pressing against the upper-front teeth with no air passing (as the t in "tamasha".

For Hindu(s), the greeting of choice is "Namaste," the two hands pressed together and held near the heart with the head gently bowed as one says, "Namaste". Thus it is both a spoken greeting and a gesture, a Mantr(a) and a Mudr(a). The prayerful hand position is a Mudr(a) called Anjali, from the root Anj, "to adorn, honor, celebrate or anoint." The hands held in union signify the oneness of an apparently dual cosmos, the bringing together of spirit and matter, or the self meeting the Self. It has been said that the right hand represents the higher nature or that which is divine in us, while the left hand represents the lower, worldly nature.

It is amazing how one word can have so much feeling and meaning.  Miigwetch is another word that is full of feeling and meaning....it can be used as a simple 'thanks', after a prayer just as 'amen' is used, as an agreement, etc.  It is the acknowledgement of truth, honesty, belief in oneself, others and the Great Spirit.

Miigwetch

Ma'iinganikwe? thank you for adding that other word in as well. I am but on the edges of Native American culture and spirituality but am very interested in learning more. I went to my first pow wow this past weekend and it was awesome! I intend on going to more and learning more.

I had two friends here, both Lakota. Thay have both since travelled with the wind but I can remember and loved sitting and talking with them about thier views on life and nature and the spirits.

Bill wrote a story once of a personal journey he took out west. He had me put it in our newsletter here. If I can find it I will post it in honor of him. Paul Eddy was a constand figure at our workshops and his story was captivating and is printed in an AA pamphlet title Is AA for you?  I think that's it.

Any way thanks for your coming back here.

P.S. What does your user name mean?

Center your heart, and cultivate your spirit.

O'siyo Glenn.  Glad you got to go to a pow wow!  I can't think of anything else that gives my Spirit a boost as much as going to a pow wow.  Just being around the Dancers, Elders, etc......sorry, I can't think of a word(s) that can suitable describe the feeling.

My name, Ma'iinganikwe, means Wolf Woman in Ojibwey.  It is part of my Native name.

I hope you can get to more pow wows this summer.
