I start a new outpatient program tomorrow. I have been in rehab once. I fell off the wagon 6 months ago and I am scared i won't get better this time.

Hi there, my name is Kathy, and I am an alcoholic. Welcome!

You can get better, if you are willing to. You have done rehab, and I will assume some 12 step program along with it. You have a lot of tools and knowledge from your treatment experience, even if you did not participate in a 12 step program. Use them!

I had 9 months and relapsed for 5 years. I went to an IOP for a year, did everything asked of me and took everything I could from the outpatient experience. I was scared as well. I turned that fear around though, and worked against it because I did not want to die.

Do your outpatient, don't just show up. Ask questions and participate.

Go to tons of 12 step meetings and dive into the fellowship.

Find yourself a sponsor, and use that sponsor. Work the steps with the sponsor and then start practicing the principles in your daily experiences.

Next time you want to pick up, sit on your hands. Make a phone call. Ride through it! It won't get any better out there, you have experienced that!

Utilize all those tools you learned in rehab. Be grateful for them. Not everyone gets the added education on the disease of addiciton that those that have been through rehab get. If you completed that program and can go back as an alumni, do it! Stay connected there.

You will get from recovery, what you put in to recovery.

was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~~~Anais Nin

I too am new here. It's a great place.

All of us have been scared, or are scared; sometimes more than we like to admit.

In about another 30 days, I too will be faced with a very scary day.
I'm from the US but live in South America. I recently went to my home state and on my first day in town, I got a DUII.
Thankfully I didn't hurt anyone, myself or the car. My wallet on the other hand hasn't faired so well. I swear, CPR didn't work so well...I suggested that we bring out the paddles and hit it with a few volts!

With all kidding aside, I believe I was lucky, or as I see it, given another chance to see who I really am. An alcoholic.

I return to the states to go to my hearing in July. In the meantime, I realized I needed some help and dd some online searching and found this site. It's a great resource and has some great people that are truely here to listen and help. Hey, it's helped keep me from taking that first drink.

Kathy's words above are well stated. I hope you find them as encouraging as I do.
Adhere to the one day at a time theory and make the best of your program.

Welcome, folara!

Kathy gave you some great advice -- all i can add is just take it one day at a time. Don't worry about whether you'll be sober tomorrow -- just concentrate on today.

Hang in there -- it will get better!

Welcome Folara !!!

I look forward to meeting you in the chatroom and/or meetings sometime soon. There are many great suggestions posted and there is never a wrong time to ask for help either. WE ARE HERE FOR EACH OTHER.

When I got sober I made a promise to myself that if I ever needed/wanted another drink that I had to sleep on it first and then see how I felt in the morning, and ya know what the desire had always left. Taking it one single day at a time, being as honest as you can be and willing to do WHATEVER it takes seems to be the key.

Take good care of YOU and thank you for your honesty and courage.
